Earlier this afternoon in Plaza Carso, an area within the Polanco neighborhood of Mexico City, a man was shot to death at a Starbucks Coffee shop. Reports indicate that this male had links to a northern Mexico drug cartel and the incident occurred in a shopping center in a northwest area of Mexico City known for its upscale clientele, expensive homes, and luxury hotels regularly used by corporate executives.
Mexico Police Chief Omar Garcia Harfuch stated that the victim had an outstanding arrest warrant in the United States for drug trafficking. This incident was the second killing this month at a Starbucks in Mexico. Earlier this month, a man was shot to death at one of the coffee shops in the Caribbean coast resort of Tulum.
Over the last three months, there’s been a significant increase in murders in areas of Mexico which has traditionally not seen violent crimes of this nature – beach towns, resorts, and business districts.
CAI recommends for business travelers and residents of Polanco that they remain aware of their surroundings, maintain vigilance when out in public, keep a low profile and review your personal security and employer’s emergency response plans.
